The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Los Angeles County that takes effect at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, and runs through 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, bringing the second round of dangerous heat to the region this month.
Inland areas can expect highs of 92 to 105 degrees, with peak temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard office. Overnight lows will offer little relief, staying in the upper 60s to lower 70s near the coast and climbing into the mid-70s to lower 80s in the foothills.
South Bay beach cities will see lower temperatures than inland neighbors. The NWS beach forecast for the LA County coastline projects highs around 80 degrees at the beaches and mid-to-upper 80s a few blocks inland through the advisory period. The marine layer should keep Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and El Segundo noticeably cooler than the advisory's headline numbers. Hawthorne, farther from the ocean, will run hotter.
The NWS warned that hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses and that warmer-than-normal overnight lows will compound discomfort. The agency said the advisory may need to be extended beyond its current Friday expiration, though forecasters noted "considerable uncertainty" about that possibility.
The weather service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid the sun during peak hours, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activity to early morning or evening. The agency also urged people to check on elderly relatives and neighbors who may lack air conditioning.
LA County operates cooling centers during heat events. Residents can find locations through the county's heat resource page. Those who want real-time emergency alerts can sign up through LA County's CodeRED notification system.
An earlier advisory ran through Aug. 9 with similar temperature projections of 90 to 105 degrees. The current advisory expires at 8 p.m. Friday unless extended; residents can monitor updates at the NWS Los Angeles forecast office website.
