While the AVP Manhattan Beach Open draws volleyball fans to the pier, three more events pack the South Bay on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16, with chances to shop, compete and support neighbors fighting cancer.
Celebrate Wellness Gala raises funds for free cancer programs
Cancer Support Community South Bay holds its 29th Annual Celebrate Wellness Gala on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Westdrift Hotel, 1400 Parkview Ave., Manhattan Beach. The Great Gatsby-themed evening runs 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and features dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions and entertainment hosted by KTLA-5 host Wendy Burch.
Tickets are $295 per person or $550 for a two-pack and can be purchased at CSCSouthBay.org or by calling 310-376-3550. All proceeds fund the Redondo Beach-based nonprofit's free programs.
Founded in 1987, CSC South Bay has served more than 30,000 people affected by cancer. The organization offers more than 200 free monthly programs, including support groups, individual counseling, healthy lifestyle classes and workshops for patients, survivors, caregivers and children as young as 5.
Executive director and CEO Jillian Van Leuven described the nonprofit's mission at its Together We Walk 5K in March: "When we show up for each other and walk side by side, we remind ourselves that none of us has to face difficult moments alone."
The gala is CSC South Bay's marquee fundraiser. A Girls Night Out event at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach last October drew 200 guests and raised $148,000, and the March 5K brought more than 275 participants and nearly $36,000.
