The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to more than double the reward for information in the unsolved shooting death of 17-year-old Chyler Paton, raising it from $20,000 to $50,000.

Paton was killed on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at approximately 8:58 p.m. on the 23000 block of Huber Avenue in Torrance. More than 13 months later, no one has been charged.

Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose district includes Torrance, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach, sponsored the motion.

"His family have lived with the pain of his death for more than a year now," Hahn said in a statement Tuesday. "We need the public's help to close this case and help deliver justice for them."

What happened

Paton, a recent Culver City High School graduate and former varsity football player, had arrived at a rented home to pick up his brother from a pool party celebrating the end of the school year. About 200 people were at the house, according to Hahn's office.

He was standing next to the homeowner in the driveway when an SUV rounded the corner and someone fired shots from the vehicle, according to Patch, citing CBS Los Angeles coverage from the time of the shooting. Someone at the party also fired back, according to that report.

Torrance Fire Department personnel responded, but Paton died at the scene. He had been set to attend California State University, Dominguez Hills that fall.

No charges filed

The investigation produced a person of interest and an arrest, but prosecutors did not file charges, according to Hahn's motion. Torrance Police Department detectives believe witnesses who have not yet come forward may be able to provide information that could move the case forward.

Hahn first established the reward in August 2025, shortly after the killing, then re-established it in November 2025 and February 2026. The Tuesday vote marks the first increase in the dollar amount.

Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, whose district includes Culver City where Paton attended high school, co-supported the motion and urged anyone with information to contact police.
