Manhattan Beach will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a public ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, at 15th Street and Valley Drive.

The Manhattan Beach Fire Department and Manhattan Beach Police Department are co-hosting the Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony from 9 to 10 a.m. at the memorial on the southwest corner of 15th Street and Valley Drive, next to Fire Station No. 1 at 400 15th St. The event honors those who lost their lives and the first responders who answered the call that day.

Drivers should plan ahead. Valley Drive between 13th Street and 15th Street will be closed from 7 to 10:30 a.m. for the ceremony, according to the event listing on MBNews.

The ceremony will include a flag lowering, placement of flowers and a wreath, and a moment of silence, the Daily News reported in a roundup of area observances.

The memorial itself holds a piece of history. The Manhattan Beach Fire Department received two steel beams from the World Trade Center site. The beams stand upright on a concrete platform inscribed with the words "We shall never forget."

The City Council and Cultural Arts Commission oversaw the memorial's creation. Designer Scott Yanofsky of Terra Firma Group was selected from 19 proposals, according to the city's memorial project page. The memorial was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2007.

Other South Bay 9/11 observances

Manhattan Beach's ceremony is one of several across the South Bay on Friday.

Hermosa Beach holds its Annual 9/11 Remembrance Wreath Laying Ceremony at 7:30 a.m. at the Hermosa Beach 9/11 Memorial on the Greenbelt at Pier Avenue. Mayor Mike Detoy is scheduled to speak. The Hermosa Beach Police Department Honor Guard and Scouts Troop 860 will post the colors, followed by ceremonial music and wreath laying by elected officials and first responders.

El Segundo's fire and police departments will host a 25th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony at 9 a.m. outside City Hall, 350 Main St., according to the city.

All three ceremonies are free and open to the public.
