The Hermosa Beach City School District will ask families whether their kids have enough textbooks at a public hearing Wednesday, Sept. 9.
The Board of Education plans to consider Resolution 26-27:01, which would certify that every student in the district has sufficient instructional materials for the 2026-27 school year. The hearing is part of the board's regular meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach City Council Chambers, 1315 Valley Drive. The board is also scheduled to vote on the resolution at the same meeting.
The district posted the hearing notice on Aug. 26 at the district office, school sites and the district website.
What the hearing covers
California Education Code Section 60119 requires every school district to hold an annual public hearing and adopt a resolution on whether each student has sufficient textbooks. The resolution covers four core subjects: reading and language arts, mathematics, science and history-social science. Materials must align to state content standards, and districts must keep the resolution on file for annual audit, according to the California Department of Education.
HBCSD operates three schools: Hermosa Valley, Hermosa Vista and Hermosa View. The 2026-27 school year began Aug. 19.
No complaints on file
The district reported zero Williams Uniform Complaints related to instructional materials for the quarter ending June 30, according to the board's July 8 agenda. The Williams Settlement requires districts to track complaints about textbook shortages.
Other South Bay districts are going through the same annual process. The Centinela Valley Union High School District, which serves Hawthorne and Lawndale, also posted a notice for its own sufficiency hearing this year.
How to participate
A closed session begins at 5 p.m., followed by the open session and public hearing at 6 p.m.
Residents can attend in person or watch the meeting live on Spectrum Cable Channel 8, Frontier Channel 31 or the HBCSD YouTube channel. Written public comments can be submitted through the district's online comment form.
