Mira Costa (1-5) opens Bay League play against 5-1 Inglewood at Coleman Stadium on Friday, Oct. 2, one of four South Bay league openers that night.

The Mustangs picked up their first win of the season Sept. 25, beating Culver City 28-21, according to the Daily Breeze. Now they face a Sentinels squad that routed Downey 35-7 the same night.

Inglewood quarterback Lincoln Jahn has been one of the area's most productive passers. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 4 win over Long Beach Poly at SoFi Stadium. Running back Marlon Watson gained 163 yards and scored a touchdown on just seven carries in that game. On the defensive front, Oklahoma commit Elija Harmon and Myels Smith combined for three tackles for loss and seven quarterback hurries against Poly.

Mira Costa coach Don Morrow acknowledged his team's offensive struggles after a Sept. 4 loss to Loyola. "Our guys are battling, but we're not offensively right now," Morrow said after that game. The Mustangs' Week 5 breakthrough against Culver City suggests progress, but Inglewood's defense has been punishing all season.

In the other Bay League opener, Redondo Union (4-2) hosts Leuzinger (1-5) at 7 p.m. The Sea Hawks dropped a tight 8-7 decision to Muir on Sept. 25 and will look to rebound behind junior quarterback Brady Grow. Coach Keith Ellison praised Grow's development in a Sept. 1 Daily Breeze profile: "Command. He's not going to wow you with a lot of things. But man, just command of the offense."

Redondo's offensive line is led by San Diego State commit Seth Sullivan, with three sophomores starting in the interior. Running back Rocky Martinez rushed for 214 yards and a touchdown in a Week 3 game.

Two more South Bay squads open league play the same night. El Segundo (3-2) hosts Culver City (2-3) in a Pioneer League game at 7 p.m. The Eagles won three straight after an 0-2 start. Hawthorne (1-5) hosts Peninsula (3-3) in an Ocean League matchup at 7 p.m.
