Swimmers and surfers can get back in the water at Redondo Beach Pier. The LA County Department of Public Health lifted its bacteria warning for the pier on Wednesday, July 8, after test results showed levels back within state standards.

The lifted advisory means Redondo Beach Pier water meets state health standards heading into the weekend. Five other LA County beaches remain under active health advisories as of Friday, July 10.

Which beaches are still under warning?

The county's Friday, July 10 advisory lists these locations:

  • Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey (entire swim area)
  • Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro (entire swim area)
  • Castlerock Storm Drain at Topanga County Beach (100 yards)
  • Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu (100 yards)
  • Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica (100 yards)

The Santa Monica Pier area has ranked among the dirtiest beaches in LA County for at least 10 consecutive years, according to a May 2026 Beach Report Card cited by the LA Times.

Two other spots that had been flagged on Wednesday, July 8 — the Pulga storm drain at Will Rogers State Beach and Ramirez Creek at Paradise Cove — were also cleared by Friday, July 10.

How to check before you go

The county's 24-hour beach conditions hotline is 1-800-525-5662. An interactive water-quality map, updated as conditions change, is available at publichealth.lacounty.gov/beach. The county also participates in a NowCast predictive modeling project with Heal the Bay and Stanford/UCLA that provides daily water-quality predictions from April through October.

What's behind the bacteria spikes?

The LA Times reported that county officials attribute elevated bacteria levels to heatwave-driven runoff. A heat wave pushed temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal across LA County the week of July 7, with coastal highs reaching the mid-80s.

Spencer Fielding, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Oxnard office, warned that relief would be short-lived: "That heat will linger and redevelop with a pretty impressive heatwave for much of the west, starting next weekend or so."

Forecast highs for Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12 are around 73 in Redondo Beach.

How South Bay beaches are tested

The Beach Cities of Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Hermosa Beach jointly collect water samples once a week year-round, alongside county testing. When samples exceed state bacteria standards, the county posts warning signs at affected beaches, updates its website, and activates its hotline.

No South Bay beach besides Redondo Beach Pier appeared on any recent advisory. Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach waters are not under any warning.
