An El Segundo venue is pairing nine indoor pickleball courts with a full-service restaurant and bar under one roof.

California Smash, at 815 N. Nash St., offers hourly court bookings, daily classes and open play alongside a 100-seat dining room called The Kitchen. No membership is required. The facility is open 365 days a year, according to the venue's website.

Food and dining columnist Richard Foss reviewed the restaurant in a piece published Thursday, Sept. 3, in Easy Reader & Peninsula. "As someone who has been reviewing restaurants for four decades, I'm quite used to a menu with terms I don't understand…" Foss wrote, nodding to the pickleball lingo woven into the dining experience. Foss, based in Manhattan Beach, has been reviewing restaurants since 1985.

The Kitchen serves what the venue describes as coastal cuisine, craft cocktails and local beer. Jeff Mori, who has nearly two decades in the restaurant and bar industry, leads the food and beverage operation.

Brett Drogmund, described on the venue's website as the driving force behind the concept, previously worked at Walt Disney Feature Animation. Co-founder Scott Doerner brings a competitive racquet sports background. He was the top-ranked junior tennis player from Australia and captained Pepperdine's 2006 NCAA championship team.

Former NFL player Marcellus Wiley, who played for the San Diego Chargers, Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys, is a partner. Wiley also heads a podcast studio inside the facility called SMASH Studio.

The venue spans 25,000 square feet and includes five event spaces. Its Instagram marketing describes "a hidden speakeasy" and "a top-tier mezzanine view" overlooking the courts. The venue says it hosted the Los Angeles Lakers, including LeBron James and Luka Dončić, for a team event.

California Smash is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Courts can be booked online at calismash.com or by calling 310-295-4048.
