Volunteers across the South Bay will dig into 13 elementary school gardens on Wednesday, Aug. 12, preparing beds and planting areas so students can start hands-on nutrition lessons when classes resume.
Beach Cities Health District is organizing its annual Volunteer Day, which kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at Dominguez Park, 200 Flagler Ln. in Redondo Beach. From there, teams of BCHD staff, residents, local organizations and corporate groups will fan out to school sites in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to ready gardens for the district's LiveWell Kids Program.
The work runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at each school site. One confirmed location is Hermosa View School, where volunteers will prepare the LiveWell Kids Garden.
No gardening experience is needed. BCHD provides all tools, supplies and guidance, and children are welcome with adult supervision.
The LiveWell Kids Program uses the school gardens to teach elementary students about nutrition through hands-on growing and cooking lessons during the school year. BCHD staff, corporate teams and neighborhood volunteers partner each August to get the 13 campuses ready before the first day of school, according to a Hermosa Beach City School District Instagram post promoting the event on July 31.
The event is free and open to residents, families, businesses and organizations. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for businesses that want to support local wellness education, according to a BCHD Facebook post promoting the event.
