Redondo Beach Unified students will have access to free mental health services through a new district partnership with Beach Cities Health District, one of more than a dozen actions the school board took at its Tuesday, Aug. 11 regular meeting, the last before the first day of school.
The board, led by Superintendent Dr. Nicole Wesley, approved a no-cost Memorandum of Understanding designating BCHD's allcove Beach Cities center as an affiliated provider under the state's Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative. The agreement allows allcove to bill for eligible mental health services provided to RBUSD students at no cost to the district.
allcove Beach Cities, located in Redondo Beach, offers free mental health, physical health, substance use, peer support and employment services for young people ages 12 to 25. Since opening a temporary center on Nov. 1, 2022, the program has logged more than 17,000 visits, with more than 2,000 young people enrolling in services, according to BCHD. A permanent facility broke ground May 16 and is expected to open in spring 2027, funded in part by a $6.3 million state grant.
"I am extremely proud of our team at allcove Beach Cities and what we've been able to accomplish, supporting the young people of our community and their overall well-being," BCHD CEO Tom Bakaly said at the May 16 groundbreaking ceremony.
March 2027 election consolidated with city races
The board also approved Resolution No. R:26-27:01, consolidating the next RBUSD Board of Education election with City of Redondo Beach municipal races on March 2, 2027. The election will fill seats for four-year terms.
Spending and contracts
The board authorized several contracts for the 2026-27 school year:
- $185,125 to Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District for the South Bay Consortium Teacher Induction Program, which pairs beginning teachers with experienced mentors through a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing-approved program.
- $46,480 to Classtime Inc. for state test preparation tools covering CAASPP and the California Science Test, funded from site supplemental funds.
- $20,000 to the Los Angeles County Office of Education for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports consulting and training, funded from Title IV. The item returned to the board after an error in the original contract amount.
- $10,000 from the City of Redondo Beach to RBUSD for use of district sites where the city operates after-school programs.
Booster clubs, field trips and more
The board authorized four Redondo Union High School booster clubs for 2026-27: Football, Theater Arts, Band, and Cross Country/Track. No fiscal impact to the district.
Adams Middle School sixth-graders were approved to attend the Pali Institute outdoor science camp in Running Springs from Sunday, April 19 through Wednesday, April 21, 2027, at an estimated cost of $400 to $600 per student. The Redondo Beach Education Foundation is covering $5,000 in transportation costs, and no student will be denied access due to inability to pay.
The board also renewed a Special Education MOU with the Redondo Beach Teachers Association for 2026-27, continuing an agreement introduced last year after a year of committee meetings with special education staff.
In closed session, Wesley and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Nick Stephany negotiated with the Friendship Foundation regarding the Franklin School Site. The board also held closed-session real property negotiations on Seasons at Redondo Beach with LINC Housing. No reportable actions emerged from closed session.
RBUSD's first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 19.
