The Hermosa Beach Triathlon returns to the pier Sunday, Aug. 9, for its 35th edition, sending swimmers, cyclists and runners along the coast starting at 7 a.m.

The race covers a quarter-mile ocean swim off the Hermosa Beach pier, a 10-mile flat bike course and a 3-mile run on the Strand. The event has sold out every year since 2018, according to the official race website. The full event window runs from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Road closures and traffic

The City of Hermosa Beach posted a traffic advisory on Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 4, warning residents of road closures during the race window. Hermosa Avenue will remain open south of Pier Avenue for drivers exiting south into Redondo Beach. Drivers heading north can use 27th Street or Longfellow to exit east.

Residents living between Valley Drive and Ardmore on 2nd Street will be unable to leave their homes by car between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Race day details

Packet pickup and the transition area open at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. A mandatory pre-race meeting takes place at the main stage at 6:45 a.m. Participants who prefer to pick up packets early can do so Saturday, Aug. 8, from noon to 4 p.m. at Sports Basement, 14351 Hindry Ave. in Hawthorne.

The race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Non-USAT members must purchase a $14 one-day pass. The minimum age to compete is 14. Relay teams of two or three are permitted, and specialty divisions include Clydesdale (men 200-plus pounds), Athena (women 165-plus pounds), Mountain Bike and ParaTriathlete.

A South Bay fixture since 1992

The triathlon dates to 1992, making it one of the longest-running multisport races in the South Bay. Last year's edition drew competitors including David Carrillo, 34, of Palos Verdes and Chris Arnold, 31, of Hermosa Beach, who were among those finishing the ocean swim leg, according to Easy Reader News.

This year's event is presented by Valley Life Health Freedom/Libertana and sponsored by Xtera Wetsuits and Sports Basement.

Awards go to the top five finishers in each age group, with the ceremony set for 9:45 a.m. at the main stage.
